Culture, Identity Storytelling

Blossom, 2020-2021

In my illustration, I depict a girl’s journey through puberty as she is metaphorically trapped inside a protective box, symbolising the constraints of Asian cultural norms. The start of her menstrual cycle becomes her means of escape, symbolising empowerment and breaking out. The box cannot trap her as she gains independence, embracing her own identity. I aim to start a conversation about culture, sexuality and the importance of supporting girls during puberty as they navigate their unique paths towards independence and self-discovery.

Through my illustrations, I aspire to narrate a compelling story that delves into the realities within specific Asian households. Focused on the transformative period of puberty for young girls, my artwork aims to capture the essence of self-discovery and the journey towards forging one’s identity during this crucial phase of life.
